How many screws does it take to hold a keyboard in place on a 15 inch MacBook Pro?
I have done hundreds of these repairs, but I’m still amazed by the amount of screws that hold the keyboard where it’s supposed to be.
It’s with good reason, if any one of these screws are missing the whole structure of the keyboard changes. It’s becomes unstable and hard to use.
This unit accidentally had a dehumidifier knocked onto it so some of the keys and the trackpad did’t work too well.
After taking the whole unit apart, I found residue that has crystallised all over the keyboard. Lucky none found it’s way on to the motherboard, so it was a case of replacing the keyboard and trackpad.
Below is the keyboard backing, you can see all the crystallisation.
After going further I noticed that the crystals have eaten away at the aluminium of the keyboard.
It has also eaten part of the casing too!
Even the Trackpad wasn’t spared, even one of the screws didn’t want to come loose.
So how may screws? I counted 72. A few are missing from the image because I was too eager to take the photo before I finished taking out the screws, oh well.
